Skylight was created through re-imagining what we could do with an unused multi-storey car park atop the iconic Tobacco Dock site. Capitalising on the ample, multi-level space and the team's wealth of event experience, we partnered with our sister company, Interact Branding to create an urban lawn club complete with croquet lawns and pétanque courts over the summer and Europe's only rooftop ice rink in winter. A lower level bar complete with DJ booth provided shelter when the weather did its worst and also was host to regular DJ sets.
The entire venue needed to be created almost from scratch, demanding a high level of technical expertise. Even the most basic of amenities such as water, power and toilet facilities had to be brought in making this an enormous project. We also built a large, partially covered mezzanine platform level to maximise those views. Throughout the process we worked in close partnership with Interact, who provided all the creative design and production.
We wanted to create a space that was distinctive and self-contained while retaining design elements that had a sense of cohesion with the rest of the Tobacco Dock offering. One of the major benefits of the location and the raised platform is the 360 views the venue affords.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and we were delighted both with the outcome and the response. Over the 27 weeks (opening 4 days a week) of the inaugural year we welcomed over 80,000 visitors.
